Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), partners in the MOMENTUM project, have recently published a review paper on Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAVs).

The paper is titled ‘Shared Autonomous Vehicle Services: a Comprehensive Review’, and is published in Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, one of the top journals in the field of transportation. It provides a comprehensive review of relevant studies in the rapidly emerging field of SAVs, for various facets of SAV deployment.

Some interesting insights from this review work are the three categories of business models, the seven categories of impacts, the eight different modelling components, relationship between vehicle replacement and change in vehicle kilometres travelled, factors affecting SAV penetration, mode choice behaviour of people, and policy suggestions like application of adaptive policy system, usage of behavioural economics and social nudges, and implementation of transit fusion.

The paper suggests a number of future research works, such as exploration of the influence of network topology and spatial distribution of requests on the efficiency of SAV services, consequences of dynamic pricing structure, impacts on bicyclists, change in total transport system capacity because of ride-sharing and issues related to social equity and public health.

MOMENTUM will build on the findings and suggestions from this review work. The modelling components described in this review work are highly relevant for modelling other emerging transport modes, which is the focus of our project. Further, the identified business models and policies from this review work will aid in constructing scenarios for the future. Finally, the suggestions for the future research works will help to improve the modelling frameworks.
